What is the Online Video Exchange?

Theatre for a Change works in partnership with the Scottish Government and Christian Aid, to develop an online video exchange between primary school teachers training in Scotland and Malawi to explore relationships and sexual wellbeing.

The online exchange is a unique, innovative new media project designed to become a living database of information about participant-centred approaches to sexual health education. The aim is to create a sustainable resource that facilitators review and contribute to throughout their training and beyond. It will remain a resource featuring challenges, solutions and discussion from participants in Africa and Scotland that will be publicly viewable, helping develop the quality of sexual health education across the globe.

Who is the exchange between?

Participants in Aberdeen

The participants in the UK comprises of 10 students studying for their BEd degree qualification at Aberdeen University. They are in their fourth year of teacher training including a mix of University based work and teacher practice placements. The program is an elective that they choose as part of their teacher training course.

Participants in Malawi

The participants in Malawi are already part of the Theatre for a Change program. The exchange involves filming their work in TFAC workshops and their lives in Kasungu, to share best practice with the students in Aberdeen, focusing on sexual health issues and education.

Activities

In between the actual recording of the films participants watch and comment on films produced by their counterparts. Participants film each other at their places of study and work. As a result they gain a better understanding of the issues and challenges faced by their counterparts and the reality of life for trainee teachers in these two incredibly different countries. Everyone participates independently in the discussions that will be raised during the filming, workshops and placements.
